Without going into too much detail here, I have been able to also place it in this area by way of walking tracks shown in a few of the overhead aerial photos. Another thing that helps identify the area this tunnel was, is several eyewitnesses speak of a cattle stop/grid and this cattle stop can be clearly seen in this photo:

There was reports in more of these affidavits of a tunnel in this general area and these reports actually confused the issue as they were so easy to mistake as being the one and same tunnel.

Barry Thomas Taylor - Mid 60s to early 70s,

Major features like the big entrance that once stood adjacent to the present visitor's car park were covered over. That entrance was so big that trucks could drive into the hill at that point, I once climbed over the gates that blocked it and walked a short distance down the roadway, which inclined down and curved to the right. I remember the oval shape of it and the equally oval lights in the ceiling.

This report hints of trucks actually being driven into this tunnel at some point, although he could also be using the size of a truck to indicate that it was a large entrance. I’ve often wondered if Barry Taylor’s memory of the times he was there was correct, or maybe his memory of seeing this entrance was of a prior visit (in the 50’s) that he had forgotten about. I say this as you can see in this above photo a set of double gates leading into what appears to be a quarried area. These gates were gone by early 1960 as per the next photo that I have been able to date due to the corner embankment has been removed and leveled, and the grass has not yet grown:

Hence you can see the frustration involved in trying to place where these entrances are.

In this photo above right, you can see the extent of the excavations. The shed on the right hand side in what is now the car park area (if I remember correctly) was used as the storage shed or motor transport as spoken of by Ralph Cooper - early 60’s  “On the next level up, a sharp bend in the road, on the (south) or city side was the O.R.S mess, this was the right hand side. To the left hand or (north) Cheltenham Beach side was a storage shed or motor transport behind the road led into a tunnel with iron grilled gates with a large chain and padlock. It is no longer there.”

Then, just to make matters even more confusing, Martin noticed this entrance apparently in the process of being built in 1942 and has a section from this same photo showing it in his latest book:     

Evidence of this also shows in another two photos taken from different positions around the hill. Interestingly, these photos (although I have zoomed in and cropped them down to make the subject visible) were taken by the RNZAF at the time, obviously to show progress of the camouflaging of the gun emplacements.
